Post-Interview Extras That Say "Choose Me"

Posted: March 3rd, 2010 @ 11:27am

You might think that the interview is the single most important part of finding a job, but what you do after the interview can seal the deal.  In today's tough job market, you need to know what extra steps to follow so you are # 1 on the recruiter's candidate list.

The job hunt is a grueling process, and a great job interview should be cause for celebration.  You presented your qualifications and accomplishments well, answered every question like a pro, and left with positive vibes. But what you don't know is how well your competitors stack up.

If you think that all you have to do is go home and wait for the offer, you're missing some golden opportunities to speed up that call.

Get into some comfy clothes and follow these simple after-the-interview guidelines to distinguish yourself from the other candidates interviewing for the position you want.  Follow these steps to set yourself apart from and above the other applicants.

1.  Within a few hours of the interview (never wait until the next day), phone the primary interviewer to thank him or her for their time.

2.  Use the thank-you phone call to add any information you may not have discussed in the interview.  You might want to mention technical skills you have that are relevant based on what you learned in the interview.

3.  Send a written thank-you note that arrives the day following the interview.  An old-fashioned handwritten note is great, but email, fax or personal delivery is a must to ensure its timely arrival.  Express your enthusiasm for the position again.

4.  Send a unique written thank-you to every person involved in the interviewing process (no form letters here!).

5.  If you have a particularly strong sponsor on your reference list, ask him or her to call or write, giving a recommendation.  Don't abuse this by sending copies of "to whom it may concern" reference letters, and remember to thank your benefactor for this favor.

6.  Stay in weekly phone contact with your primary contact. That way, you'll be aware of hiring progress and you can use the call as another opportunity to say, "I'm very interested! What's the next step?"

By taking these simple steps after the interview, you'll demonstrate your enthusiasm and professionalism - and distinguish yourself from other job-hunters waiting by the phone.  Keep your profile fresh in the mind of the recruiter and you're more likely to be the candidate hired for the job!
